About This Scholarship

The United Nations – Nippon Foundation Fellowship provides advanced training on ocean affairs and the law of the sea to mid-level government officials and professionals from developing States, including training at UN Headquarters and a research placement at an academic institution. Fellows conduct individual research under academic supervision, develop professional skills in ocean governance, and return to their home countries to formulate comprehensive ocean policy and implement international legal frameworks.

What This Scholarship Covers

  • Full tuition and training programme costs
  • Accommodation during training phase (March to June 2027)
  • Accommodation during research placement (July to December 2027)
  • Monthly stipend
  • Round-trip airfare to New York
  • Health insurance

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Be between 25 and 45 years of age
  • 2 Hold at least a first university degree or equivalent qualification
  • 3 Demonstrate ability to undertake advanced academic research and study
  • 4 Be a national of a developing State
  • 5 Be a mid-level government official or mid-level professional working directly on ocean affairs and/or the law of the sea
  • 6 Have a strong command of spoken and written English
  • 7 Be able to participate in-person in all fellowship activities
