About This Scholarship

The Harvard Academy Scholars Program is a two-year, in-residence postdoctoral fellowship for outstanding early-career researchers whose work combines excellence in social science disciplines with expertise in countries or regions outside the United States or Canada. Fellows receive substantial financial and research support, mentorship from senior Harvard scholars, and the opportunity to conduct innovative interdisciplinary research at one of the world’s leading institutions.

What This Scholarship Covers

  • Annual stipend of $80,000
  • Annual research support of $6,000
  • In-residence postdoctoral appointment at Harvard University
  • Mentorship from Harvard Academy Senior Scholars
  • Access to Harvard's extensive library system
  • Invitation to teach Harvard classes (optional)
  • Opportunity for one-time leave up to 12 months between Years 1 and 2

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must have completed a PhD in a social science or law discipline
  • 2 Must demonstrate excellence in a social science discipline
  • 3 Must have command of a foreign language and knowledge/expertise of countries or regions outside the United States or Canada
  • 4 Must show promise for a career in research universities or international institutions
  • 5 Must be at the start of their academic career (recent PhD graduates or doctoral candidates)
  • 6 PhD transcript required
  • 7 Selection based on merit, regardless of nationality, race, color, or gender

How to Apply

Submit curriculum vitae (CV) including list of publications

Submit research proposal (maximum 2000 words) detailing intellectual objectives, methodological, and disciplinary work

Submit one scholarly writing sample (maximum 50 pages) such as a PhD dissertation chapter or peer-reviewed journal article in English

Submit copy of PhD program transcript

Arrange for three letters of recommendation to be uploaded directly and confidentially by recommenders through the online application

Submit all application materials through the online application portal by the deadline
