About This Scholarship
TWAS offers between 100-160 PhD fellowships annually for international students to undertake doctoral research at partner institutes in developing countries. The fellowship provides partial cost of study funding, accommodation, and return economy airfare to support PhD scientists building scientific strength in the developing world.
What This Scholarship Covers
- Partial cost of study (tuition fees)

- Return economy airfare
- Visa and/or study permit costs
Who Can Apply
- 1 Must be a citizen of a non-EU developing country
- 2 Must have proficiency in English
- 3 Each TWAS partner institute has its own specific eligibility criteria that must be reviewed
- 4 Only acceptance letters dated the same year as the year of application are eligible
- 5 Applicants may apply for only one programme per calendar year in the TWAS and OWSD portfolio
