About This Scholarship

The Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation is Africa’s biggest prize dedicated to engineering innovation, awarding commercialisation support to African innovators developing scalable engineering solutions to local challenges. Winners receive up to £50,000 in prize money plus an eight-month tailored training programme with two fully-funded training weeks in the UK and a major African city, along with access to business expertise, mentoring, and the Academy’s network of engineers and business experts.

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must be a citizen of a country in sub-Saharan Africa
  • 2 For teams of two or more, the lead applicant must be a citizen of a sub-Saharan African country
  • 3 Must be ordinarily based in sub-Saharan Africa (temporary overseas stay for studies permitted)
  • 4 Must be over 18 years old at application close
  • 5 Must have high level of English proficiency
  • 6 Application must be written in English
  • 7 Cannot be an alumni of the Africa Prize or part of the same team, business or innovation previously through the Prize
  • 8 Industrial researchers and establishments are not eligible
  • 9 Alumni of the Academy's Advance programme are not eligible
  • 10 Alumni of the Leaders in Innovation Fellowship (LIF) programme who participated after June 2024 are not eligible
  • 11 LIF alumni who participated before June 2024 may be eligible if they can evidence why Africa Prize participation is necessary and adds value
