About This Scholarship

The Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship supports international students undertaking a master’s by research or doctoral degree at Curtin University, covering eligible tuition fees and providing a tax-free living stipend. The scholarship provides up to three years and six months of stipend support for PhD students and up to two years for research master’s students, with possible allowances toward approved research-related costs.

What This Scholarship Covers

  • Research Training Program fee offset covering eligible Higher Degree by Research tuition fees
  • Tax-free stipend for living expenses
  • AUD 38,440 per year (2026 rate for PhD, subject to possible indexation in 2027)
  • Stipend support for up to three years and six months of full-time equivalent PhD study
  • Stipend support for up to two years of eligible research master's study
  • Possible Research Training Program allowances toward approved ancillary costs associated with research degree

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Apply for an eligible Higher Degree by Research at a Curtin University campus in Australia
  • 2 Meet the academic admission requirements of the selected research degree
  • 3 Meet Curtin University's English-language requirements (IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 in each component for PhD)
  • 4 Identify an eligible registered Curtin supervisor or apply for an advertised research project
  • 5 Submit an Expression of Interest during the scholarship round
  • 6 Obtain an endorsed Invitation to Apply from the proposed supervisor or project lead
  • 7 Demonstrate excellent academic performance and strong research potential
  • 8 Possess a degree containing a substantial research component, generally equivalent to at least 25% of the qualification
  • 9 For PhD admission, generally need a relevant master's degree or bachelor's degree with first-class or upper-second-class honours
  • 10 Not have already completed a PhD
  • 11 Current students must not already be receiving a base Higher Degree by Research stipend, have supervisor support, maintain Good Standing, and have completed no more than 18 months of full-time equivalent enrolment as of July 1, 2026
