About This Scholarship
The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation offers prestigious scholarships for international Master’s and PhD students studying at Japanese graduate schools, with monthly stipends ranging from ¥180,000 to ¥230,000 depending on programme duration. The scholarship allows direct applications from students worldwide without requiring university nomination, provided they have secured admission to a Japanese graduate school.
What This Scholarship Covers
- Monthly stipend of ¥230,000 per month for 1-2 year programmes
- Monthly stipend of ¥210,000 per month for 3 year programmes
- Monthly stipend of ¥180,000 per month for programmes longer than 3 years
- Travel grant to cover expenses for attending international conferences
Who Can Apply
- 1 Must not possess Japanese citizenship
- 2 Must be enrolled or planning to enroll as of April 2026 in a graduate school in Japan
- 3 Must be pursuing a Master's or Doctoral degree
- 4 Must have secured acceptance to or be planning to enroll in a Japanese graduate school
- 5 Minimum enrollment period of one year or longer
- 6 Cannot receive other scholarships concurrently, except for Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students, JSPS International Fellowship, or Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) Fellowship (if JST approved)
- 7 May directly apply to the foundation without university pre-selection
