About This Scholarship

The ASEA-UNINET Ernst Mach Scholarship 2027 offers three routes for students and researchers from Southeast Asia: a 36-month full PhD programme, a 4-to-6-month postdoctoral research grant, and a nine-month music practice award at ASEA-UNINET member universities in Austria. The scholarship is funded by Austria’s Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research and aims to foster scientific and intercultural exchange between Europe and the ASEAN region.

What This Scholarship Covers

  • €1,300 monthly scholarship stipend for PhD route
  • €300 monthly mobility allowance
  • Full tuition waiver at Austrian public universities
  • Applicants responsible for housing costs (€55-€200 per month estimated)
  • Applicants responsible for health insurance costs

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must be a citizen of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, or Vietnam
  • 2 For Full PhD Grant: must be a postgraduate applicant who has previously studied at a higher-education institution outside Austria
  • 3 For Postdoc Grant: must already be involved in teaching and research at an ASEA-UNINET member university in an eligible country
  • 4 For Music route: must be an undergraduate or graduate-level candidate working in instrumental or vocal performance, composition, or conducting
  • 5 Must be 35 years or younger (postdocs may be up to 45 years old)
  • 6 Must demonstrate fluency in English and/or German
  • 7 PhD applicants must provide English language proof at B2 or C1 level depending on chosen programme

How to Apply

Find an appropriate doctorate supervisor and Austrian university that is an ASEA-UNINET member

Write a 5-10 page study proposal addressing research problem, literature, methods, anticipated outcomes, schedule, and contribution

Obtain an official Letter of Acceptance or Consent from a qualified Austrian supervisor

Prepare two letters of academic recommendation (PhD applicants require one from a university in eligible home country that is ASEA-UNINET member)
5
Prepare passport, graduation certificates, and B2/C1 English language proof
6
Submit application via Austrian OeAD/grants system
7
Acknowledge usage of generative AI in research proposal preparation if applicable
8
Complete separate Austrian university admissions process if necessary
9
Participate in formal screening, expert evaluation, and in-person interviews assessing language proficiency and research quality
