About This Scholarship

The Cave Canem Fellowship is a fully funded literary retreat designed to support and develop the work of Black poets through intensive workshops, readings, and professional development. The 2027 retreat takes place June 6-13, 2027 at the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg, offering participants access to esteemed faculty and an expansive community of peer poets.

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must be at least 21 years old at the time of the 2027 Cave Canem Retreat (June 6-13, 2027)
  • 2 Must identify as a Black poet
  • 3 Must submit application via Submittable with cover letter and poetry writing sample

How to Apply

Prepare a cover letter clearly communicating relationship to poetry, artistic goals, and reasons for seeking participation in Cave Canem community

Prepare a PDF containing six (6) pages of poems written in English with poet's name removed from all pages

Format poetry submission with page breaks separating each poem, each poem title in bold, 12-point serif font, and page numbers in footer (e.g., "Page 2 of 6")
