About This Scholarship

The Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize recognises exceptional leadership shown by young activists aged 18-30 in defending and promoting democracy. The winner receives USD 10,000, one-year mentorship, and fully funded participation in the Athens Democracy Forum and One Young World Summit 2026 in Cape Town.

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Be aged between 18-30 at the time of application
  • 2 Have demonstrated capacity for leadership
  • 3 Be willing and able to participate in public activities at the Athens Democracy Forum and One Young World Summit 2026
  • 4 Submit a short video outlining work defending democracy and reasons for engagement
  • 5 Submit application in English
  • 6 Submit a letter of support from an organisation recognised in protecting and advancing democracy
  • 7 Letter writer must state full name, organisation and title
  • 8 Letter writer must explain how they know you and length of relationship
  • 9 Letter writer must explain their understanding of your role
  • 10 Letter writer must explain why they believe your work helps protect and advance democracy
  • 11 Letter writer must not be a family member, personal friend, employee or co-founder
  • 12 Letter must be written in English
  • 13 Applicant must provide explicit consent to share supporter's personal details with One Young World
