About This Scholarship
The Media Defence Sub-Saharan Africa Litigation Surgery is a three-day workshop (October 2-4, 2026) in Nairobi, Kenya designed for lawyers from Sub-Saharan Africa to advance the protection of human rights through strategic litigation. Participants will learn from specialists, strengthen their understanding of relevant legal frameworks, and engage in practical case discussions and peer learning activities focused on freedom of expression, assembly, association, and related human rights issues.

Who Can Apply
- 1 Must be a qualified lawyer who currently works and resides in Sub-Saharan Africa
- 2 Must demonstrate working proficiency in the English language
- 3 Must be in private practice or affiliated with a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that promotes human rights through litigation
- 4 Must demonstrate experience, interest in, or knowledge of freedom of expression, freedom of association and assembly, digital rights, internet freedom, or related areas
- 5 Must demonstrate knowledge of, or experience engaging with, international and regional human rights law
- 6 Must submit a case study as part of the application involving a violation of freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and association, the rights of human rights defenders, or related human rights issues (case may be one currently being litigated or intended to be litigated, or applicants may identify a relevant law, practice, or policy they wish to challenge)
