About This Scholarship

The MEXT Scholarship offers fully funded undergraduate education in Japan for international students, including tuition coverage, monthly stipend, and accommodation support. Students study at Japanese national universities and may receive preparatory education in Japanese language before beginning their undergraduate courses.

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must be a high school graduate or equivalent (or those who will graduate by the end of March in the year of application)
  • 2 Must not have Japanese nationality
  • 3 Must be under 25 years old at the time of application
  • 4 Must be physically and mentally healthy
  • 5 Must have academic ability to pursue undergraduate studies
  • 6 Must not be simultaneously receiving other government scholarships
  • 7 Must commit to studying full-time at a Japanese national university

How to Apply

Contact the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in your country for specific application procedures and schedule (typically between April and May for the following year's intake)

Prepare required documents: completed Application Form for FY2027, Certificate of Health (completed by a professional medical doctor), and Recommendation Letter

Complete the Direct Placement Preference Application Form to indicate university choices and field of study preferences
4
Submit all documents to the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in your country (DO NOT send directly to MEXT in Japan)
5
First screening conducted by the Japanese Embassy/Consulate between May and August
6
Selected candidates notified of results
