About This Scholarship

The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in Portugal is opening its annual call for fully funded PhD studentships to support research activities leading to a PhD degree across all scientific fields. The award provides monthly allowance, tuition fees, training support, travel costs, and personal accident insurance for doctoral candidates meeting merit-based criteria.

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must be enrolled or eligible to enroll in a PhD program
  • 2 Must not have previously benefited from any PhD studentship funded directly by FCT
  • 3 Must not hold a doctoral degree
  • 4 Must reside in Portugal on a permanent and habitual basis if applying for a studentship carried out both in Portugal and abroad or entirely abroad
  • 5 Must be a Portuguese citizen, EU citizen, third-country national, stateless person, or political refugee
  • 6 Must meet all admissibility requirements outlined in section 4 of the Notice of the Call

Upload all supporting documents as listed in the RBI and Notice of the Call

Submit before March 31st, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. (Lisbon time)

Contracting Institutions have until April 17th, 2026 (10 working days) to validate applications

Applications are evaluated by expert panels based on three criteria: Merit of the Applicant (30%), Merit of the Work Plan (40%), and Merit of the Hosting Conditions (30%)
