About This Scholarship

The Senckenberg Global Fellowships support highly motivated early-career scientists (doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers) from the Global South to conduct research in Germany in collaboration with Senckenberg scientists. Fellows gain access to Senckenberg’s 41 million object collection, research laboratories, libraries, and scientific expertise across multiple research fields.

What This Scholarship Covers

  • Monthly stipend (1,600 € for PhD students or 2,700 € for postdocs)
  • One-time travel allowance (up to 1,200 €)
  • Access to Senckenberg collection (41 million objects)
  • Access to research laboratories and research infrastructure
  • Access to libraries
  • Access to scientific expertise and staff

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must be a doctoral candidate or postdoctoral researcher from a Global South country (as per OECD list)
  • 2 Must hold a Master's or PhD degree
  • 3 Must not have permanent residence in Germany, EU countries, North America, Australia or similar locations
  • 4 Must identify and collaborate with a suitable scientific host at Senckenberg
  • 5 Must not receive parallel project funding during the fellowship period
  • 6 Must develop a high-quality research project concept with the Senckenberg host

How to Apply

Identify a suitable scientific host at one of Senckenberg's research institutes

Develop a research project concept in collaboration with the host

Complete the online application form (available 4 weeks before deadline)

Submit letter of motivation (max. 1 page) with research interests and experience

Submit project description (max. 1 page) detailing planned goals, implementation, and how the research enriches your methods and research portfolio

Obtain and submit letter of support from Senckenberg host(s) acknowledging the applicant and proposed work
7
Submit all required documents by the application deadline
8
Wait for approval (maximum 8 weeks processing time)
9
Begin fellowship within 3 months of approval
