About This Scholarship

The UAPS/AIR P3 Africa Fellowship supports early- and mid-career African doctoral researchers through an integrated combination of research grants, intensive training, and expert mentorship to produce high-impact population and health research. The 12-month fellowship includes a USD 10,000 research grant, a 5-day residential training workshop, and matched mentorship from experienced researchers.

What This Scholarship Covers

  • Research grant USD 10,000 (disbursed in two tranches of USD 5,000)
  • Data collection, research assistance, fieldwork travel, analysis tools, and dissemination costs covered
  • 5-day residential training workshop including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods training
  • Working with DHS, IPUMS, census and administrative data
  • Scientific writing and journal article structure training
  • Peer review and academic publishing training
  • Research ethics and ethical approval guidance
  • Policy translation and evidence briefs training
  • Travel, accommodation, and subsistence for training workshop covered
  • 12 months paired mentorship matched by theme, method, and geography
  • Feedback on proposal, data tools, draft findings, and final report

Who Can Apply

  • 1 UAPS dues-paying Student Member in good standing
  • 2 Citizen of an African country, currently based and working in Africa
  • 3 Master's degree in demography, public health, sociology, economics, epidemiology, statistics, or related field
  • 4 Currently enrolled in a doctoral programme with coursework completed
  • 5 Not a previous AfRes-Data or UAPS/AIR P3 fellow
  • 6 Research focus must be in population studies (reproductive health, migration, urbanisation, climate change, adolescent health, ageing, gender, health and well-being)
  • 7 Research must be conducted in and relevant to an African context
  • 8 Applications accepted in English or French
