About This Scholarship

The Indigenous Fellowship Programme, launched in 1997 by OHCHR, provides indigenous persons with knowledge about the UN system and mechanisms dealing with human rights issues and indigenous affairs. The 4-week training programme in Geneva includes simultaneous interpretation in four language components and allows fellows to participate in the annual session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

What This Scholarship Covers

  • Living expenses
  • Basic health insurance for the duration of the training

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must be an indigenous person
  • 2 Must have good working knowledge of the language in which the programme is imparted (English, French, Spanish, or Portuguese)
  • 3 Must be proposed and supported by an indigenous organization and/or community
  • 4 Must agree to train other indigenous persons upon return to their respective communities/organizations
  • 5 Women, LGBTQI+ individuals, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply
  • 6 Formal education is not a limitation to participation

How to Apply

Complete the full application form (both parts I and II)

Obtain an official recommendation letter from the nominating Indigenous organization or community

Upload the recommendation letter directly to the online application form

Submit the completed application before the deadline

Pre-selected candidates (15-20 per language group) will be contacted for interviews

Final selection is reviewed by an advisory group composed of OHCHR staff
