About This Scholarship

The UBC Public Scholars Award supports doctoral students who link their PhD work to areas of public benefit and broader forms of scholarship beyond traditional academia. Awards of up to $10,000 are available to support innovative or collaborative scholarship projects, with eligible scholars able to apply for renewal funding in a second year.

What This Scholarship Covers

  • Research allowance (including professional development or travel relevant to scholarly work)
  • Student stipend (if current funding source does not allow alternative projects)
  • Renewal funding of up to $10,000 for second year (one-time, separate application)

Who Can Apply

  • 1 UBC Vancouver doctoral students (PhD, EdD, DMA, including part-time PhD students) in years 1-5, or UBC Okanagan doctoral students in years 1-5
  • 2 Must have completed no more than 48 months of doctoral study as of 31 August 2026
  • 3 Must be registered in a UBC doctoral program as of 1 September 2026
  • 4 Applicants in their 6th year (48 to 60 months of doctoral study) accepted only in exceptional circumstances with prior PSI approval
  • 5 Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international students eligible

How to Apply

Register and attend optional information sessions (held on Zoom on March 16 or April 20, 2026)

Complete the PSI Fellowship Application Form (2026-2027)

Provide applicant information including UBC student number, graduate program, and doctoral project title

Submit outline of proposed scholarly work

Describe relationship of proposal to PSI goals

Provide academic references

Disclose any leaves of absence or special circumstances impacting research

Complete budget section with itemized amounts and justification
9
If requesting stipend support, provide current funding sources, other scholarship applications made, and explanation of why current support is insufficient

List external collaborators and their organizations if applicable

Sign and submit application by 22 May 2026
