About This Scholarship

Awards of USD $5,000 each support African scientists, extension specialists, or educators conducting education, training, and communication programs to improve plant nutrient use and efficiency in African agro-ecosystems. Applicants must submit creative plans addressing knowledge gaps in soil fertility management practices aligned with APNI’s priority initiatives including 4R Nutrient Stewardship, water management innovations, soil health diagnostics, and precision farming.

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must be a full-time scientist, extension specialist, or educator
  • 2 Must work at an African NARES institution (National Agricultural Research and Extension System), university, non-profit organization, or private sector organization
  • 3 Must not be a student
  • 4 Must submit a creative plan addressing knowledge gaps in soil fertility management in African agro-ecosystems
  • 5 Preference given to research aligned with APNI high priority initiatives (4R Nutrient Stewardship, Nutrient and Water Management Innovations for Resilient Agriculture for African Drylands, Soil Health Nutrient Management and Diagnostics, Precision Farming, Farmer-led On-farm Innovation)
  • 6 Evidence of partnerships and collaboration favorably reviewed
  • 7 Female candidates especially encouraged to apply

How to Apply

Prepare electronic (PDF) copies of all required documents in advance

Submit a description of how the fellowship will lead to improved outreach or implementation of appropriate soil fertility management, including details on new initiatives, data synthesis, communication tools, training events, or travel

Upload electronic copies of two letters of support (one from applicant's supervisor) signed and written on official letterhead with phone number and email address of letter writers

Upload resume/CV including academic degrees and relevant publications/communication products on soil fertility management

Complete online application form

Submit a short report on fund usage at the end of the award period
