About This Scholarship
The Mandela Washington Fellowship brings approximately 550 young African leaders to the United States for an intensive six-week executive-style leadership program at a U.S. college or university. Participants engage in academic and professional activities designed to build connections and expertise across key sectors.
What This Scholarship Covers
- J-1 visa support
- Round-trip travel from home country to the United States
- Program-related travel within the United States
- Living allowance (stipend)
- Accident and sickness health insurance
Who Can Apply
- 1 Are between the ages of 25 and 35 on or before the application deadline, although exceptional applicants ages 21-24 may be considered.
- 2 Are citizens of one of the eligible African countries.
- 3 Are residents of an eligible African country and will be permanently residing there as of February 1, 2027, and at the beginning of the Fellowship in June 2027.
- 4 Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
- 5 Are eligible to receive a United States J-1 visa.
- 6 Are proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- 7 Are not employees or immediate family members of employees of the U.S. Government or IREX.
- 8 Are not alumni or prior participants of the Mandela Washington Fellowship.
