About This Scholarship
The Chevening British Library Coptic Collections Fellowship is a 12-month project-based fellowship for mid-career professionals from Egypt, Palestine, and Sudan to work at the British Library on surveying, cataloguing, and researching Coptic manuscript collections. Fellows will contribute to enhancing catalogue records, investigating collection provenance, and developing public engagement activities around this globally significant cultural heritage collection.
What This Scholarship Covers
- 12-month period of project-based activity at the British Library
- Living expenses for the duration of the fellowship
- Return economy airfare
- Allowance package for fellowship-related activities
- Up to £1,000 for approved project-related expenses
Who Can Apply
- 1 Be a citizen of Egypt, Sudan, or Palestine
- 2 Be normally resident in one of these countries, or resident in Chevening eligible, ODA-eligible countries in the Middle East and North Africa region (Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen)
- 3 Demonstrate a clear intention to return to and contribute to country of citizenship following the fellowship
- 4 Return to country of citizenship for at least one year after the fellowship ends
- 5 Hold a postgraduate level qualification or equivalent professional training/experience in a relevant area at time of application
- 6 Have significant professional and/or academic research experience (at least five years)
- 7 Be currently employed or enrolled as a PhD candidate (PhD must not be with a UK/EU or USA university)
- 8 Have excellent knowledge of Coptic (Sahidic or Bohairic), with knowledge of Arabic and/or Greek desirable
- 9 Have good written and spoken English with ability to communicate research findings effectively
- 10 Have experience of cataloguing and handling manuscript collections with knowledge of manuscript description standards
- 11 Have experience of provenance research and documentation, or demonstrable interest in this area
- 12 Have experience of working with heritage communities or delivering engagement activities related to cultural heritage collections
