About This Scholarship

The ETH Postdoctoral Fellowship programme supports incoming postdoctoral researchers at ETH Zurich to conduct independent research without financial constraints. The programme fosters young scientists who have demonstrated excellence in early career stages, with approximately 40-50% of fellows securing professorships within a few years after the fellowship.

What This Scholarship Covers

  • Salary (100%, based on ETH standards)
  • CHF 12,000 per year for research expenses including travel/mobility allowances and research costs

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must hold a doctorate (PhD) at the time of submission or obtain it within six months
  • 2 If doctorate is obtained within six months, must submit certification of planned defense date signed by advisor or department chair
  • 3 Doctorate must have been obtained a maximum of two years prior to the submission deadline
  • 4 Must not have earned doctoral degree from ETH Zurich or University of Zurich
  • 5 Must not have resided or carried out main activity in Switzerland for more than twelve months in the three years immediately before submission deadline
  • 6 Must not have carried out main activity at ETH Zurich, EPF Lausanne, PSI, WSL, Empa, Eawag, or University of Zurich for more than six months in the three years immediately before submission deadline
  • 7 Must have at least one scientific publication in a peer-reviewed journal or have been awarded a prize for doctoral thesis
  • 8 Must have an ETH Zurich professor willing to serve as mentor and host
  • 9 Host professor must have a guaranteed ETH position for the entire duration of the proposed fellowship

How to Apply

Contact potential host professor early to ensure their eligibility as mentor

Obtain invitation letter from host professor

Prepare joint application with host professor

Upload host professor's invitation letter with application

Arrange for two external reference letters from referees

Referees must email letters directly to Grants Office at least 10 days prior to submission deadline

Reference letters must include letterhead and signature of reference provider

Submit complete application by deadline
