About This Scholarship

The IIAS Asia in the World Fellowship is a nine-month residential programme for early- to mid-career researchers and knowledge professionals consisting of a three-month phase at a co-host partner institution in Asia, Africa, Latin America, or Europe, followed by a six-month residency at IIAS in Leiden. The fellowship promotes innovative research and global collaboration in Asian Studies with a truly multi-centred approach to knowledge production.

What This Scholarship Covers

  • Monthly stipend €1,250 gross per month during Leiden residency (Phase 2)
  • Housing allowance €1,200 per month towards accommodation costs during Phase 2
  • Access to shared office space at IIAS
  • Private seminar room access
  • University library access
  • Screening room access
  • Stipend for Phase 1 provided by co-host institution

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must hold a PhD or have PhD defence/viva scheduled no later than September 2026
  • 2 Must be fully available for the entire 9-month fellowship period
  • 3 Must not combine the fellowship with other fellowships or employment contracts
  • 4 If currently employed or affiliated with another institution, must secure official release from duties for the full duration
  • 5 Must have a good command of English
  • 6 Research project must engage with Asia as part of wider global formations and align with IIAS thematic clusters (Cities, The Politics of Culture, Asia in the World, Humanities Across Borders, Knowledge Diplomacy in Action)
  • 7 For Category A (fully funded): must be applying for the fully funded modality
  • 8 For Category B (self-funded): must have confirmed external or personal funding for the full period
  • 9 For Category C (independent professionals): must be a journalist, writer, diplomat, policy maker, curator, or other relevant professional with a track record in their field and confirmed external or personal funding
