About This Scholarship
The NRF-funded South African Research Chair in Equality, Law and Social Justice at Wits University offers PhD and LLM by Research bursaries for postgraduate researchers whose work contributes to equality, human rights and social justice in Africa. The bursaries provide substantial financial support to eligible South African and African students conducting full-time research under the supervision of the Chair or associated academics.
What This Scholarship Covers
- Full tuition and research support (approximately R200,000 for PhD or R190,000 for LLM for students with 75% or higher average)
- Partial funding (approximately R150,000 for PhD or R145,000 for LLM for students with minimum 65% average)
Who Can Apply
- 1 Must be a South African citizen or national of another African country
- 2 Must intend to study full-time at Wits University
- 3 Must conduct research under the supervision of the Equality, Law and Social Justice Chair or an associated academic
- 4 Must have a minimum average of 65% in previous degree (LLB or LLM)
- 5 Must be 30 years old or younger for LLM bursary in 2027
- 6 Must be 32 years old or younger for PhD bursary in 2027
- 7 Must be successfully admitted to the relevant Wits School of Law programme
