About This Scholarship

The Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships support Indian Ph.D. scholars in conducting advanced research at U.S. academic institutions for 6-9 months to strengthen long-term capacity in addressing global challenges. Selected scholars will undertake dissertation-critical research, audit non-degree courses, and gain practical work experience in the United States.

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must be a citizen of India
  • 2 Must be registered for Ph.D. at an Indian institution on or before November 1, 2025
  • 3 Expected Ph.D. thesis submission date must be at least three months after the Fulbright-Nehru grant end date
  • 4 Must provide clear justification on the need for undertaking research in the U.S. and the U.S. institution identified
  • 5 Must provide one recommendation letter from Ph.D. supervisor commenting on research, need for fellowship, Ph.D. registration date and topic
  • 6 If employed, must obtain employer's endorsement indicating leave will be granted for fellowship period
  • 7 Must submit a copy of original published/presented paper or extracts from Masters'/M.Phil. thesis (not exceeding 20 pages)
  • 8 Research proposal must focus on one of the priority areas: Critical Minerals and Supply Chains, Defense and Security, Energy Security, Science and Research Collaboration, Space Cooperation, or Technology and Innovation
