About This Scholarship

The Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program enables South African university faculty and research institute professionals to conduct research in their field of expertise at U.S. academic or research institutions for 3 to 9 months. The program aims to strengthen academic programs and curricula at scholars’ home institutions through high-level research collaboration.

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Must hold a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in their field at the time of application
  • 2 Must be a South African citizen OR a permanent resident with a minimum of 5 years of permanent residency status in South Africa
  • 3 Must not hold dual South African/U.S. citizenship
  • 4 Preference given to individuals with a minimum of 3 years of university teaching experience and a productive scholarly record
  • 5 Must have sufficient proficiency in English to carry out projects and collaborate effectively with colleagues
  • 6 Must be in good health
  • 7 Applications for doctoral dissertation research, post-doctoral research immediately following completion of a doctorate degree, or general professional travel are ineligible
  • 8 Preference given to candidates who have not previously received a Fulbright scholar grant or have had limited experience in the U.S.
