About This Scholarship

The JSPS International Fellowships offer postdoctoral research opportunities for outstanding early-career scholars from ASEAN and beyond to conduct independent cooperative research under mentorship of world-class Japanese scientists. The fellowship provides generous stipends, travel allowances, and access to state-of-the-art facilities at Japanese universities and national research institutes.

What This Scholarship Covers

  • Round-trip airfare
  • Monthly stipend (PhD holders: ¥362,000; Non-PhD holders: ¥200,000)
  • Settling-in allowance (¥200,000 for fellowships of 3 months or longer)
  • Overseas travel insurance
  • Research support allowance (up to ¥70,000 per month for cooperative research expenses)

Who Can Apply

  • 1 PhD holders from ASEAN: PhD obtained 6 years ago or less, obtained outside Japan
  • 2 Doctoral candidates from ASEAN: Currently enrolled in PhD program with expected graduation within 2 years
  • 3 PhD holders from non-ASEAN countries: PhD obtained 6 years ago or less plus at least 3 years research experience in an ASEAN institution
  • 4 Doctoral candidates from non-ASEAN countries: Enrolled in PhD program with expected graduation within 2 years and 3 years research experience in an ASEAN institution
  • 5 Host researcher must be affiliated with a KAKENHI-eligible institution
  • 6 Host researcher must be a full-time researcher (with exceptions for uninterrupted program support)
  • 7 Host must remain constant throughout the fellowship
  • 8 Previous JSPS Fellowship recipients (Standard, PE, PA, PU) are ineligible

How to Apply

Identify a prospective host researcher at a Japanese KAKENHI-eligible institution and contact them directly

Submit application through your country's JSPS nominating authority via the ASEAN University Network portal by August 28, 2026 (5 p.m. JST)

Your nominating authority reviews and forwards endorsed applications to JSPS by December 1, 2026
4
Receive selection notice approximately three months after nomination
5
Consult your national JSPS Alumni Association for guidance
