About This Scholarship

The MATS Autumn 2026 fellowship programme connects researchers and field-builders with mentors from leading AI organizations to conduct impactful research on AI safety, alignment, governance, and related fields. Selected fellows receive comprehensive support including funding, housing, meals, compute resources, and mentorship to enable full-time focus on their research projects.

Who Can Apply

  • 1 Highly motivated to contribute to AI alignment, transparency, interpretability, governance, policy, frontier AI safety, systems security, or biosecurity
  • 2 Willing to engage seriously with infohazard considerations and operate within publication and disclosure frameworks
  • 3 Background in relevant fields welcome including biology, AI safety, public health, epidemiology, machine learning, engineering, chemistry, biosafety, biosecurity, and national security
  • 4 Must provide contact details for two references

How to Apply

Stage 1: Submit general application including personal and academic background information, short responses tailored to selected research tracks (1-2 hours), and contact details for two references by June 7, 2026

Stage 2: Successfully screened applicants complete centralized evaluations tailored to specific tracks (research taste evaluations, technical assessments, writing assessments, analytical reasoning exercises depending on track)

Stage 3: Apply directly to specific mentor streams with stream-specific questions, research proposals, and interviews or work tests as required by mentors

Final selection through mentor evaluations, applicant ranking, and matching process with offer notifications expected late July to early August 2026
